Collecting
Buttons are remarkable. Far from just being utilitarian clothing closures, buttons can provoke "oohs" and "aahs." They reflect fashion, history, culture, and technology. Surprising numbers of buttons are miniature works of art.
If you would like to learn more about buttons and button collecting, there are regional, state, national, and international organizations to help you do so. The Wikipedia article on Button collecting is also being expanded to be helpful to new collectors.

Have you noticed historical markers along the roads when you are driving? Did you know there is an international database in which many of these markers are documented? Are any of these markers related to buttons? If you conduct a Historical Markers Database search on the keyword "buttons," you will turn up a number of them, though other, non-relevant results will also turn up (such as a marker mentioning someone with the last name of Button). One particularly interesting marker I found in my search is titled Where Did Buttons Come From. It is located in Leavenworth, Indiana. It has a "see also" section which links to an article titled Indiana's Pearl and Button Boom, which is filled with interesting information.
